A walk through Moscow – continued talking about the urban photos

A walk through Moscow

A walk through Moscow – while I wandered around town with a camera, it occurred to me, that today it is necessary to continue the conversation about urban photos. So to speak, pressing. It's about how, how to capture images so commonplace, so it was interesting not only for you yourselves. This is one of the today's conversation, and the second theme – This particular survey of urban and street photography on 50mm lens. I'll start with the second theme.

Still, it turned out, that this article is no longer devoted to the technical aspects of shooting on 50mm lens, than on creativity. Yes, I encourage everyone to take just such a type of lens. Just me more, and prefer to shoot it on the Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor.

Features of the shooting in the city on a lens with a focal length of 50mm DC

For those, who for the first time on my website or did not read the previous article – I decided to put the experiment and take in the city on the Nikon D750 and Nikkor 50mm 1,8. For fifty dollars Street photo fits perfectly, but for the urban landscape and architectural photography with him to work harder – It lacks angle and not put everything in the frame. Usually I take the city on the Sony SLT a77 with Zeiss lens 16-80 and these focal lengths is sufficient for all.

shooting at 50 mm , I began to get used to working with this focal length, and I think, that this experiment is very useful. When searching for and selecting the desired angle shooting place, learns to pay attention to details and to see the entire object. It is difficult to understand, not until you try. Let me explain:

In the town, especially in the older parts, closely enough at home, objects are very close fitting to each other, and the streets are not as wide. Trying to remove the historic building on the 50mm lens is faced with the challenge – All it simply does not fit in the frame, and you can not move – narrow street. Therefore it is necessary to shoot diagonally, looking for a point with which the object is fit and details will be visible. here, looking for the right place and choosing the optimum angle, get used to "see" the entire object. This is the first advantage of working with 50mm lens.

Selecting the camera angle for shooting at home
Choosing the right angle

The second advantage – this aperture. 1,8 this is serious. In fact, the opportunity to open the aperture 1,8 really helps when shooting in narrow streets or in the doorways, where there are always problems with lighting. Even on sunny days in such places there is a shadow, and there is a need, or open the aperture, or to increase exposure, or raise iso. Increasing the exposure we risk getting blurry picture, If you're shooting handheld, and not with a tripod, and raising iso, We can get noises.

by the way, choice Nikon D750 camera is connected including the latest issue. Since I mostly Street photographer, then increase the shutter speed is not always appropriate for me. therefore, to take pictures of people in the dynamics, We have to raise iso, which means the appearance of noise in pictures. If it does not deal with a fierce sense of noise and graininess sometimes even added, then with colored noise must be fought. Nikon D750 in this regard, a great camera and it can be shoot at sufficiently high values of the iso.

Of course, even at such a wonderful camera, it is not necessary to lift up above ISO 1600 – 2000 kopecks, but such values for street photos, and streetscape is more than enough.

At all, often say, that the ISO working from a particular camera 6 400, and that i 12 800. That's what I want to say about it – ISO working a subjective concept. Looking for something working. If instagramma or to post the picture in social networks, that yes – uzhimaya shot up 1000 pixels on the long side we get a very good picture. already need a picture for posting on the site in 2000 pixels and ISO 6400 already will cause problems in the processing of. Just make a reservation – quality depends not only on the ISO, but also on the presence of deep shadows in the picture, and much more. I.e, removing the relatively bright image on a high ISO, noise will be less, than when using compositions, where there are strongly shaded areas. In the shadows and appear mainly color noise and lost detail. Degradation occurs on any color images at high, but it is in the shadows, she is most severe.

That's why the opportunity to open the aperture when shooting on the streets is very important. I was recently told, that opening the diaphragm we reduce the depth of field. This is partly because, but it mainly concerns the objects, that we are shooting at a distance meter or two. It happens, that removing or rub a small object, part of it is not in focus.

When we were shooting in the city, it is usually the distance we have great – from 10 meters and more. Therefore, there is no depth of field problems, even when shooting wide open 1,8. Need to say, I sometimes use for such cases a special mobile application SetMyCamera – field zone calculator.

for example, when shooting at the aperture of a building with distance 10 m, We get the depth of field in 4 and a half meters. It means, that all parts of the facade, if we do the front picture, will be in the zone of sharpness. But 10 m – seldom turns. Especially, I shoot on 50mm lens – generally the distance to the subject is 20 meters and more. at 20 m almost the entire facade of a small town house, shot at an angle 45 degrees, It is clearly visible in full and with all the details.

So that, for me the choice of a high aperture ratio or a set of focal lengths bent toward the aperture. It's certainly not all the reasons, which I take now Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor. But this basic, As regards the technical aspects of shooting.

About the creative aspects of the talk is always more difficult. Speaking about the merits of the lens, talking about figure, hips, flat or volumetric image is obtained. I would like to express their opinion on the matter. And Figure plane or its bulkiness – in my opinion very subjective determination. That's when talking about bokeh, really seen, but about the picture or volume ...... In my view three-dimensional image depends on shooting conditions and post-processing, and not so much on the lens itself. Try to remove any object on a bright sunny day, when the sun completely fills the object with bright light – without processing such image may appear flat. And then the same lens, remove a person or a building in the modal time or, as some say, the golden hour. Here believe, that the amount and pattern will appear. So we have now moved on to the creative aspects, because , Again, in my opinion, lens image – This conversation is about creativity, and not about the technical features of the device.

A walk through Moscow from Paveletskaya station to the city center – City Photo commonness

And what about the work of? What we have today? Today, as an illustration to the article I present a small photo walk around Moscow. unusually, is not it? well yes, and where I still walk, but in Moscow. We are talking about everyday life. Generally, the term routine we perceive as something not very good, something opposite dynamics, drive. In fact, it is more than routine 90 percent of a person's life. Well, think for yourself: sleep – it is routine and takes 30 percent of our lives; food, washing, trips to the store, the way to work…. Even James Bond routine – it's a big part of their lives.

Walk through the usual streets on a normal working day – Just ordinary song. Not interested? in front of – common situations and interesting, and his beautiful. There are pluses in the ordinary – perseverance, reliability, confidence, traditions. You can think of a lot of terms to describe the normal city life.

Urban photographer task to convey their attitude to life. This can be a positive attitude, and may be critical – all this is passed on pictures.

The photographer can stick out negative – slovenliness, sadness and dullness, routine, vanity. And it is also commonplace.

I sometimes think, Select pictures mood depends not only on a case, and the state of the soul of the photographer. That's the way he sees the world – gray and dull or ordinary, but bright enough. In short, who is he – optimistic or pessimistic. I am more optimistic.

so, this time I got out on Paveletskaya and walked along Novokuznetskaya and Pyatnitskaya streets Moscow. The most common old Moscow streets with a mix of the old and not so old mansions and houses the development of socialism. sometimes say, that this is the real Moscow. It seems to me, that this statement is only partially correct.

In my opinion – it is only a small part of this Moscow, but very significant. And very sorry, that this part is rarely seen on postcards or posters advertising. Why? And because, that this part of the usual – everyday. It does not get a bright picture for the city visitors. To me, this part of the city very much – sense of security and continuity. Here's another word pool – continuity, heritage. by the way, when demolishing historic buildings and replaced Novodel mansions and shopping centers, in my opinion is the destruction of ties with the past and a sense of being collapses reliability and continuity of generations. Links with the past are torn, and it is very bad ...... in my subjective view. so, Walk in Moscow on a typical day at the most ordinary streets:

wine bar
Wine Bar in a wooden house in front of Paveletskaya
Small town house
On Novokuznetskaya street are many such here small mansions of the past two centuries
In the alleys
In Moscow lanes

Snow
Here the object, which can be described in different ways. optimist, to which I belong, write well – A pile of collected snow, ready for export. Pessimists write, the snow is collected and forget about it, and here he is already fig knows how long it is and bothers everyone 🙂
People
Hurry and violate – The usual thing

  • Wonderful article, I have been looking for such information for a long time. Heading for a trip, have to shoot in an urban setting, there are two lenses, one 18-55, and second 50 mm, 1.8. I really like to shoot fifty dollars, I thought for a long time whether to take it or not to take it with me, now all questions have disappeared, unequivocally, if you shoot thoughtfully, you can shoot perfectly in urban conditions. thanks for the advice.

You're right, choosing fifty dollars. This lens is still good for, that it can be a good portrait lens for shooting full-length portraits and even waist-length portraits. I.e, universal glass. Only, what I want to note, what 50 mm on a full frame – this is 50 mm, and on the crop, if a 50 mm created for full-frame camera, then the viewing angle will already be equivalent to approximately 80 mm. It depends on what crop. This has both pros and cons.: pluses - viewing angle equivalent 80-85 mm – this is a classic portrait lens with minimal distortion; minuses – the viewing angle is still narrower. But the viewing angle is not so terrible in the city, if the streets are not very narrow. For street photography 50 mm and on the crop a good option, along with 30 mm lens.
