The cathedral was built in 1561 by order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the victory over the Kazan Khanate. And as the official victory came in homage of the Holy Virgin, and the temple was devoted to this holiday.
Construction of the cathedral shrouded in mystery and legends. The most common version - The cathedral was built by Pskov masters Postnik Yakovlev, who was called Barma. In another version of the temple was built by foreign architects, who participated in the construction of the Kremlin. But in the time of Ivan the Terrible such events were recorded, and records no mention of, that someone of Italian builders designed and built the temple.
St. Basil's Cathedral Church came to be called by name in an attached 1588 , the Church of St. Basil.
Temple repeatedly changed - idle galleries and arches, and 1817 , the retaining wall was built by the architect Osip Bove and mounted cast-iron fence.
It is worth noting, that the Council was not a single temple. It houses several churches, the leading independent service. At the beginning 18 century there were more than 20.
AT 1918 the new government recognized Church Cultural Monuments, at 1923 , the historical and architectural museum was organized in the Temple. WITH 1928 year St. Basil's Cathedral became a branch of the Historical Museum, whom he is to this day.
Worship in the Temple were dyed in 1929 year, and 1991 year, after making sharing of the museum and the ROC, service was resumed.
St. Basil's Cathedral has eleven domes and bell tower, which was built in 1680 year.
Photo St. Basil's Cathedral can be done from three directions - from the Red Square, From the Kremlin wall and Vasilyevsky Spusk. You can try to take pictures with the bridge, but you will interfere with the wires. The most spectacular images are obtained from the Red Square. The shot hits the monument to Minin and Pozharsky. On the track near the Kremlin wall photos are also impressive - crosses completely visible. On the part of Vasilyevsky Spusk visible retaining wall and photograph comes from below, but if you go away, then the frame gets more and Spasskaya Tower at night, when the backlight is turned on, you can get great photos.
